Living close to nature within the city of Vienna
WILLDAwohnen is the name of our community and means “I want to live here” in German.
WILLDAwohnen is a small group of persons who are building a house together – or to be precise, four houses. The building site lies within a beautiful area of Vienna, called Wildgarten. It’s close to Rosenhügel in the southwest of Vienna at the boundary of the districts of Meidling und Liesing.

Who We Are
The core community of WILLDAwohnen has been founded in 2016.
We constitute a group of various generations (29 adults and 14 children), professions and interests. Our diverse talents are our basis on which we want to build our community. The goal is cross-generation, social and open way of living.
WILLDAwohnen shall become the home of individual and modern living, self-organized and in sharing community. A family oriented architecture and the nearby kindergarten make it the perfect home for families.
Our community is organized in form of a registered association (Wohnprojekt WILLDAwohnen), which constitutes the legal entity for our contracting partner, like e.g. construction companies. For Internal discussions and decision making processes we follow the rules of Sociocracy. We are connected to friend cohousing projects for knowledge sharing and collaboration, which is nicely supported by the Wildgarten neighbourhood center .
The date for moving-in into our new houses was winter 2020/21.
Our Vision
Our community is cherishing, solidary and open for development. By sharing and living together relaxed and mosted we reach our goal of a high-quality living. Floating within our neighbourhood and on our green roof tops we are living three-dimensional open garden. “Wildgarten”
The neighbourhood in which our solidary housing project is currently beingbuilt is called “Wildgarten” (wild garden). It is located at Vienna’s Rosenhügel (rose hill). It is a completely new residential developmentwhich incorporates different types of housing estates, among them four housing cooperatives following the idea of co-living. The masterplan for the area was realized by the Madrid Architecture Office arenasbasabepalacios after the launch of a European Urban Design Competition for young and innovative architecture offices in 2010 (EUROPAN). One of the winning architects was already familiar with Vienna’s rolling hills and southern Vienna’s proximity to the nearby Alpine highlands which led to the creation of an urban design concept for the Wildgarten neighbourhood based on intensive greenery and the absence of cars.
For further details and the history of the Wildgarden area can be found here.
Public Transport
The splendid open space therefore is the key defining element of the Wildgarten area which is connected to the existing city train lines with two adjacent stations Hetzendorf and Atzgersdorf (City Train Lines S2, S3, S4). Hetzendorf is just five stops from one of Vienna’s central local stations (Wien-Mitte) and only three stops from the Vienna Main Railway Station. Bus line 63A stops directly at the border of the Wildgarten area (Stop Mona-Lisa-Steiner-Weg). Tramline 62 directly connects the nearby former urban village of Hetzendorf to the Karlsplatz/Opera area where many Austrian science and arts institutions are based. There is also a direct bus connection to the Hiezing district where the Austrian public broadcaster ORF and the famous Schlosspark of Schönbrunn are situated. The medium term plans for the public transport in the area even contain a dedicated local train station in the middle between Hetzendorf and Atzgersdorf, connecting the area directly to the train station Vienna Meidling and Vienna main station.
Quality of Life for the Smallest Ones
The Wildgarten is the perfect spot to enjoy the highest quality of life Vienna has to offer, to visit the nearby natural resorts of the Wiener Wald and to enjoy the urban flair while finding a moment for retreat and contemplation on our rooftop terrace with its adjacent Saunathek (Sauna plus Library). The housing estate in which the flat is located provides some common features, among them an ample collective kitchen, joint laundry facilities as well as a self-organized carpenters’ workshop. The nearby neighborhood centre has just been refurbished and provides a kindergarden (KIWI Kindergarten Wildgarten) facility especially attractive for families coming for work and leisure. The kindergarden is in the direct neighbourhood of our house. It was founded in 2017 and enjoys great popularity among our children, some of which already visit this kindergarden now.

Co-Living
Community Rooms
The ground floor areas within our cooperative housing project provide the common areas, like the creativity zone, a common kitchen for group events or private parties, or the Flex-room (flexible room) for group meetings, film events or table tennis.
The rooftop represents the recreational area: a Finnish sauna and a library. Parts of the roof can also be used for gardening and barbecue.
The patio provides a playground for small children (zero to 6 years). The meadow surrounding our houses can be used for further gardening activities, and the nearby Neighbourhood Center Wildgarten provides an ample outdoor and indoor space for intergenerational exchange.
Community Infrastructure
The cohousing area contains a laundry room, a food cooperative and two bicycle garages, as well as a carpenter’s workshop space.
Common Patio
Our patio represents the common center of our cohousing group. The roofed area between two of the houses which is open towards the patio is called creativity zone. It provides space for smaller reconstruction works, bicycle repairs or handcrafting.
Commercial Areas
We do not only provide common areas available to our community and guests, we also arrange commercial services to our inhabitants and external guests.
Co-Working Space
The ground floor contains an approx. 100 m² large co-working space providing between 6 and 10 working places, a self-catered coffee bar, a meeting room and and a small single office. Co-working places can be be booked by interested co-workers and by guests.

Guest Appartment
For our guests only the best! The guest apartment is our most prominent flat. Situated at the top of our tallest building, directly besides the rooftop terrace and the Saunathek, it provides the best view over our neighborhood up to the Vienna Woods.
Located closeby the Hetzendorfer Schloss (and its prominent fashion school), the Lainzer Tiergarten (the emperor’s former hunting grounds) und Schloss Schönbrunn (hosting Europe’s most popular zoo) the cozily designed guest flat offers place for families or couples, for groups of max. 4 people or single travellers, who want to discover the Danube metropolis, or who came to the capital city for earning their living, and who would simultaneously seek to enjoy the ease of living in a wild garden.
Guests may use our scooters, bicycles or cargo bikes, they can participate in the collective everyday activities of our cooperative and solidary housing project, or they simply enjoy the splendid view from their rooftop terrace.
How to get there? The next station to the Wildgarten is S-Hetzendorf (S1, S2 or S3), just three train stops away from Vienna New Main Train Station, and five stops from Wien-Mitte/Landstraße, where the City Airport Train arrives from Vienna International Airport. The area comprises also three lateral parking garages. In the future, innovative car-sharing models will facilitate the direct link between the airport and the Wildgarten (35min). Bus lines 56A, 56B, 58A and 63A (Station Mona-Lisa-Steiner-Weg) can be reached in 3 to 10 minutes walking distance. How To Get On Board
We are reaching out for persons who share our vision of a solidary and cooperative housing project (co-housing). You will find vacant flats announced on this site. For the moment there is no apartment available. Maybe you want to rent a desk at our Co-Working Space?
Becoming a Member
Our co-housing project is organized as an association, which means we ourselves are accountable for our decisions and development. This provides flexibility, but requires an active involvement of our members.
Contribution
Our community is self-organized and operates the house on its own. The tasks are distributed between several groups, specialized e.g. on architecture, open space, communication, community, finance and contracts, and the like. Our cohousing concept relies on the contribution of each of its members to accomplish the different tasks at stake to maintain our individual and community spaces. The commitment is voluntary and the members are free to choose their preferred area of commitment.
Individual Living Areas
The construction is finalized, which means that flat plans are already fixed. Within the flats and outside of the flats there is still space for smaller adjustments. Cost for realizing individual plans within a flat have to be carried by the inhabitants of each respective flat. Since the space outside the flat is shared with the community, changes have to be decided in accordance with the community.
